WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SCHEDULE A WELCOME HOME BABY SESSION? Typically the best time to schedule is as soon as possible so that we can set the date when the baby would be under 2 weeks of age. It is not unusual for me to have Mum's book in their fifth or sixth month, particularly if they are interested in maternity photos as well as newborn. However, please don’t hesitate to contact me to check availability as I can photograph newborns at any age.
HOW LONG DOES THE WELCOME HOME BABY SESSION GO FOR? I advise my clients to allow at least an two - three hours as these can run overtime depending on how often your baby needs to feed or any other interruptions there may be. I am pretty flexible when there is a newborn involved! On the rare ooccasion that we catch baby on an “off day,” depending on how the images turn out, I may arrange to come back a second time if need be. I strive to give each and every client the highest quality service and ensure that you have beautiful images to remember your baby’s first days.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE FOR MY SESSION? This is where the pre-planning appointment comes in handy, we will briefly discuss how the session will run and go over any questions you may have. The most important thing is to relax and be yourself! One of my core principles is that I am never in a rush during a session. If we need to stop so you can feed baby again, that is no problem! I like to use that time to chat with my clients and get to know them better.
DO I NEED TO PROVIDE ANY BLANKETS OR PROPS FOR MY SESSION? I generally rely on items in your home for my session so that your images are unique to your family and reflect the items that you use for your baby. I don't tend to use props unless you have sentimental items that you would like me to incorporate, I would be more than happy to use them! I do however, like to include the nursery, bassinet, hospital bracelets, going home outfit and any other areas of your home which are appropriate, as these all contribute in creating the perfect story to remember the early days.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY PROPS? By props, I mean any item a baby could be placed in, on, or with in order to achieve a stylized or themed look to an image. So, I don’t use baskets, buckets, bowls, and the like for posing babies. I also do not use elaborate prop setups such as sports themes (e.g. baby posed on a basketball or football) or animal themes.
The other type of props that people commonly ask about are wearing apparel such as hats, bonnets, headbands, and little knitted pants or outfits. I don't have a collection of items since my style is very simple and focuses on baby. However, if you have made, purchased or received an item as a gift that you would like to incorporate into the session, I am more than happy to use it.
WHAT IS NATURAL POSING? Natural posing is also sometimes referred to as “baby-led” posing, and that is a good description of it. Basically it just means following your baby’s lead about how they want their arms and legs to be placed, and not obsessing about flattening the hands in every shot. (As you probably know, newborns naturally ball their fists most of the time). Letting baby’s preferences take the lead allows their little personality to shine through in their portraits! It also makes the portraits a bit more true to life. I do also still utilize some of the more directed poses that you may have seen online in addition to natural posing.
WILL I BE ABLE TO BE IN THE PHOTOS WITH MY BABY? Of course! The session includes Mother, Father, Baby and Siblings. You are all so important to your baby and to not have you involved would feel like something is missing.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? Dress as you please! If you would prefer some guidance, I am more than happy to discuss some ideas in our pre-planning session.
DO YOU REQUIRE A DEPOSIT OR SESSION FEE? I require a 50% non=refundable (transferable) deposit to confirm your booking, If we need to reschedule, the deposit will be applied to the future session.
WHAT GEAR DO YOU USE? I shoot with a Canon 1200D paired with the 50mm f/1.8 the majority of the time. I edit all my images in the latest Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CC.
